John Cope cup downriver race
Saturday 8th July 2023.
Race Officer and Safety Boat: Jane S-H and Jon L.
This modern stainless steel cup commemorates a former harbourmaster who tragically died of cancer. It was first raced in 1967 and is awarded to the winner of the annual downriver race from Putney to County Hall and back.
This year the race was well fought, between two lasers (Elaine and Karin) and Enfin Enterprise (Matt and Peter van A).
The start was delayed as we waited for more wind, less rain and a clear launch ramp (many rowers).
In pouring rain Karin led from the club house start line to the first leg finish line buoy - this year placed opposite the Heli-pad - and then .. Elaine whizzed past her finishing 58 seconds ahead!
The wet weather cleared up and the sun came out on the slower return leg. Alas Elaine got stuck on the wrong side of the river whereas Karin caught a helpful current and crossed the finish line first.
1. Laser Karen 1:48:48 2. Enterprise Matt +Peter van A 1:50:32, 3. Laser Elaine 1:58:42.
Congratulations Karin and thanks to everyone for competing and adding to the fun!
Jane SH
